Shimmer Johnson’s frail voice can knock you off your feet. Sounding like a young woman still skipping the step stones on her life’s path, but clearly caught in life’s wonderment, her single “It’s Fate’s Turn” weaves dreamy piano keys, effervescent guitar and Johnson’s idyllic vocals into an impressive pop track. If you aren’t ensconced with Johnson’s voice by the song’s end, then you won’t be living your best life. For even just a quick visit in her world is a sweet escape. “It’s Fate’s Turn” is Shimmer’s summer 2021 single.
I felt cheated, how would I ever win, the Canadian born-singer sings. What I enjoyed most about this line, and several other lyrics in “It’s Fate’s Turn” is that she really reveals a certain vulnerability. You can hear that same nakedness in her voice, as there are moments where she’s almost trembling. It’s interesting, though, because I don’t think of her as modest or shy. She also carries herself with confidence. It’s a wonderful, vibrant dynamic. Her voice holds such honesty and natural character.
As the story unfolds, her voice continues to evolve and pull back layer after layer. I loved the lines I’m becoming where I’m supposed to be and then later yes, I’m running, I’m finally free. Her song is about letting things playout and not get so stuck in your head on every decision. It’s also about not holding onto those decisions you do make. I think when we live with regret, we can only hold ourselves back.
The rousing way Johnson sings, her power is in her approachability. She doesn’t put up walls in this song. The piano, as well as the steady rhythm are mixed under her voice. She’s moving forward, and ahead of the music. I thought that was an important touch. Even if it’s just the voice in our head, we sometimes have a tennis match between our gut instinct and heart – I think in this case the music bed and the lyrics are a tie
One last line that really moved me is when Johnson sings, take a spin to be on a chance of change. I think we’ve all been there, holding a collective breath and biting our lip in fear. There’s a grip we put on, often an anxiety-ridden apprehension. Johnson sings with ease, with guided light that one would never feel those pressures or alerts. This song is like a smooth dance, a whimsical journey. Still, the guitar and the electricity happening in the undercurrent adds a sparkle of modern flare.
I’m impressed with Johnson’s artistry and by her emotive performance. This song is a game-changer. It’s also a comforting, hug-like companion. It’s hard to take that spin in ourselves, and even if we crave change, we still must take that first step. Johnson might not push us down that path – but she sure gives us the imagination to envision it. I’m in awe that Johnson can put these feelings to song – “It’s Fate’s Turn” is an exceptional single from an artist whose star is rising.
