Hailing from the Great White North, aka Canada, Patiently Awaiting the Meteorite may be praying for the end of the mankind with their tongues firmly planted in their cheeks, yet they prove themselves capable of bringing the musical hammer down yet again with the second single from Canyon Diabo titled Strange Intuition.
This is just the sort of single the band needed following the success of the album’s first, Electrified, as it reins in the stylistic reach of the first song in favor of reaffirming the band’s rock influences. It does so, however, without ever seeming too heavy handed about it – there’s none of the bash and thud coming from this band that we might encounter with lesser modern practitioners of the form.
Instead, Patiently Awaiting the Meteorite come across as an artistic outfit that’s chosen to co-opt this style for their own uses, adhering somewhat to its formulas, yet intent on pouring old wine into new bottles. They’ve scored in a big way with this single release.
Dee’s already made a sizable impact as a songwriter and singer with previous releases like Filter Factory and Miles and Miles (Living on the Edge), but his work with the Grand Brothers will soon deserve the accolade as being the best work of his young career.
The lyrics for Strange Intuition deserve plaudits as well thanks to how they clearly lay out a character while still rarely succumbing, even in part, to the usual array of clichés weighing down modern rock songwriting.
Whereas other modern bands turning their hand towards rock like the Greta Van Fleets of the world remain resistant to current musical relevancy, instead taking comfort in the past, Patiently Awaiting the Meteorite joins the ranks of other bands who are clearly interested in bringing about a marriage between the present and the past, allowing one to inform the other.
The Grand Brothers have also experienced notable success, including major label and award winning releases, but they sound like a writing and production team reborn with this release. Inspiration is a word we often toss around, unfortunately not with its deserved regard, but it’s a word that applies here – both Dee and the Grand Brothers intensely respond to one another’s contributions.
It’s remarkable this sort of interplay is so apparent on a studio recording and we can only assume, with the recent announcement of live dates in Montreal scheduled for December 2018 that quality will only come across even more strongly within a live setting.
The guitar, bass, and drums at the band’s disposal are used to excellent effect, but the deciding factor that gives Strange Intuition much of its modern varnish comes from the electronic and synthesizer driven touches flashing like quicksilver over the song’s surface. It’s the flash and flair they bring to each of their songs without ever sounding like they’re pandering to a specific audience and gives them much of their signature sound without ever sounding laid on too thick.
Patiently Awaiting the Meteorite is, thankfully, not patient about waiting for success and it’s going to continue coming their way with singles like Strange Intuition.
