SXSW 2019 will always have a special place in my heart as it contains many amazing memories that I will cherish for a lifetime. The best memory of it will be catching up with old friends Danny Wilde & Phil Solem of The Rembrandts who I had not seen in 15 years.
When I first started planning out a schedule for the festival, I had to do a double take when I saw their name listed. I thought, could it be true? I was glad to see that it was & I knew from that moment that whatever day they played, my whole plan of action would focus around being up front & center at Lamberts for the Blue Elan Records SXSW Showcase.
Leading up to the show, we got a few hints of potential songs that might get played which I was super excited about since one of my all time favorites Follow You Down was on the list. Thankfully I am glad to finally have seen that song performed live!
The band opened up with an amazing performance of a longtime fan favorite Burning Timber off their 1990 self-titled debut album. They followed it up with a couple of oldies but goodies in Rollin’ Down The Hill & Johnny Have You Seen Her? both from their 1992 sophomore album Untitled.
Next up we got to hear the awesome new single How Far Would You Go. The performance of it was absolutely flawless with that classic feel, sound & catchy chorus that The Rembrandts are masters at. They followed it up with the aforementioned Follow You Down which I loved every second of!
I definitely liked that they also played their first ever single & hit Just The Way It Is, Baby as it sounded just as good as it did the day it came out. We also got to hear a rocking performance of This House Is Not A Home before we got the big finale in I’ll Be There For You.
Old school fans such as myself who go back to the pre-Friends days were strongly represented by the choice of songs they played on this night. I was glad to finally get to hear a number of these songs live. The best part was seeing the room packed from front to back with a lot of true fans who knew their vast catalog of amazing music.
