My next stop on my first day of SXSW was to head to Cheer Up Charlies for the Modern Outsider Records SXSW Showcase where 2 of my must see bands were playing on the same night. First up, I was going to catch the highly acclaimed Austin-based band Ume.
Ume consists of Lauren Larson Vocals/Guitar, Eric Larson Bass, Don Cento Guitar & Aaron Perez Drums. I only knew one song from the band as I discovered them in the SXSW 2019 app while planning my schedule. However from what I heard in that one song, I knew it would be a band I had to see.
I was completely right as the foursome played an amazing 10 song set to a packed crowd that kicked off with a strong performance of Too Big World. From the outset, I could tell that Lauren had some serious stage presence & would be quite the firecracker.
One of my favorite songs of the entire set was The Center which is off their most recent album 2018’s Other Nature. I love the opening bass lines that are followed quickly by the sweet guitar work from Lauren. I definitely would love to hear this song live more.
After seeing Ume play, I became an instant fan & wished they were based in NYC so I could see them play a lot more. Everyone in the band was on point & I have to give Lauren major props for not only the great guitar licks, raw & powerful vocals but the awesome energy she put into putting on a show as a front woman!
